Elaine is riding 60km for refugees!
Hi friends,
I would appreciate it if you could sponsor me. Thanks
Trivia
1.What group is the largest group of people in refugee camps who don’t qualify for refugee status under international refugee law?
2.What is the biggest problem confronting refugee camps?
Answers
1.Children born in refugee camps or en route to refugee camps do not qualify for refugee status (they aren’t escaping a situation).
2.Boredom, which results in high HIV/AIDS rates. In many countries, refugees are not allowed to leave the camp, work or study without sponsorship.
Elaine and some friends are participating in Ride for Refugees this Saturday to help raise awareness of refugee issues.
The numbers are staggering – there are 42 million refugees and internally displaced peoples according to a United Nations 2008 report. Over half are women and children, vulnerable and voiceless while they flee war, persecution and tribal violence.
The RIDE is a way that we can personally connect to this crisis, and it’s a way for us to make a real difference in a refugee’s life.
Money raised will help give hope to refugees, with activities such as:
•Sponsoring young adults to undertake tertiary education
•Teaching women to sew and providing them with access to sewing machines
•Other micro-business initiatives
•Events, such as singing or dancing competitions (with local media publicity, which may result in work for the refugees).
" Our team, Kirk Riders from Kirkplace church, enjoyed the day riding together - but even more, we wanted to raise awareness & much-needed resources for work with those who've been displaced.".– Kirkplace team captain
